The Writer's Cove

Free Flying Tips for Writing Great Essays!

YES!  YES! YES!

  1. Take the time to plan and organize your thoughts.
  2. Write a "hook." You must grab the reader's attention.
  3. Use transitional words and phrases, especially between paragraphs.
  4. Stay on topic. Don't stray off. Make sure your examples support the topic at hand.
  5. Give specific details for the points you are making. Support your ideas.
  6. Make sure your personality shines through the essay. This is your "voice."
  7. Be sure your writing is grammatically correct.
  8. Stay away from the basic writing styles. Creativity earns bonus points!
  9. PROOFREAD! Many mistakes can be avoided if you do this.

THE BIG NO-N0'S!

  1. Don't rush through the prewriting phase. This is how you plan your essay.
  2. Don't tell me what you're going to do. JUST DO IT!
  3. This is not a note to your best friend. Don't write like it is.
  4. Don't confuse essays. Expository means "to explain." Persuade means "to convince."
  5. Indent your paragraphs. Don't skip lines!
  6. Always remember - quality not quantity. A long essay can still get a low grade.
