The
Writer's Cove
YES! YES! YES!
- Take the time to plan and organize your thoughts.
- Write a "hook." You must grab the reader's attention.
- Use transitional words and phrases, especially between paragraphs.
- Stay on topic. Don't stray off. Make sure your examples support the topic at hand.
- Give specific details for the points you are making. Support your ideas.
- Make sure your personality shines through the essay. This is your "voice."
- Be sure your writing is grammatically correct.
- Stay away from the basic writing styles. Creativity earns bonus points!
- PROOFREAD! Many mistakes can be avoided if you do this.
THE BIG
NO-N0'S!
- Don't rush through the prewriting phase. This is how you plan your essay.
- Don't tell me what you're going to do. JUST DO IT!
- This is not a note to your best friend. Don't write like it is.
- Don't confuse essays. Expository means "to explain." Persuade means "to convince."
- Indent your paragraphs. Don't skip lines!
- Always remember - quality not quantity. A long essay can still get a low grade.
